Headaches and jaw joint problems

Treatment example: Temporomandibular joint traction

Headaches and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems such as clicking, clenching, or grinding, coupled with incorrect tongue posture, can significantly impair well-being. The causes are often complex and require a holistic approach to find effective solutions.

The connections between jaw, tongue and head

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a central role in the interaction between the head, neck, and spine. A dysfunction of the TMJ can be caused by:

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching)

  • Muscle tension in the jaw area

  • Misaligned teeth and chewing on one side only

  • an incorrect tongue resting position

These imbalances can be exacerbated. They can trigger tension headaches or migraines via the adjacent muscles and fascial system.

The tongue's resting position is crucial, as it influences jaw and head posture over the years. A tongue that doesn't rest relaxed against the palate, but instead presses against the teeth or lies on the floor of the mouth, can cause misalignment in the jaw.

Osteopathy: Holistic solutions

Osteopathy views the body as a unit and specifically seeks the causes of ailments. Osteopaths can:

  • Relieve tension in the jaw and head area,

  • to improve the mobility of the temporomandibular joint,

  • Treating blockages in the cervical spine,

  • Recognizing and correcting dysfunctions of the tongue muscles,

  • Identify and correct dysfunctions throughout the entire body.

A recent study (Smith et al., 2023) shows that osteopathic treatments can significantly improve pain and joint function in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. These results underscore the therapeutic benefits of osteopathy in the treatment of jaw and head complaints.

Physiotherapy for jaw problems

They focus on:

  • Strengthening of the jaw muscles,

  • Improvement of posture and body statics,

  • In collaboration with speech therapy: Training of tongue resting position through myofunctional therapy

Through targeted physiotherapy exercises, patients can actively participate in their recovery.

Exercises for everyday life

In addition to treatments, there are effective self-help options:

  1. Relaxing the jaw: Open and close your mouth slowly without clenching your teeth. Gently place the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth to practice the correct tongue position.

  2. Self-massage of the jaw muscles: Place your fingers on the chewing muscles (on the cheeks to the sides of the ears) and massage them with gentle pressure in circular motions. This can release tension and promote blood circulation.

Lifestyle adjustments for long-term improvements

In the long term, lifestyle adjustments can significantly reduce symptoms:

  • Stress management: Relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation help to prevent bruxism and muscle tension.

  • Exercise: Regular exercise, such as walking, swimming or gymnastics, helps to prevent tension and improve blood circulation.

  • Finding relaxation: Conscious breaks and hobbies that bring joy contribute to mental and physical regeneration.

Headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and incorrect tongue posture are closely linked and can significantly impact daily life. Osteopathy and physiotherapy offer effective solutions to alleviate discomfort and sustainably improve body posture. Supplemented by targeted exercises and a mindful lifestyle, those affected can actively contribute to their recovery.
