Respiratory physiotherapy: How conscious breathing strengthens our balance

Respiratory physiotherapy in practice

In my osteopathic and physiotherapeutic work, I encounter people daily who suffer from chronic fatigue, tension, breathing difficulties, jaw pain, or inner restlessness. What many don't realize is that the way we breathe plays a central role in our health – and in our emotional balance.

Our breathing is mostly unconscious, yet it influences almost all bodily systems: metabolism, the nervous system, posture, sleep – even our emotions. Respiratory physiotherapy helps us to consciously harness this silent power again.

Breathing: much more than just taking in oxygen

Most people breathe too much – too frequently and mostly through their mouths. Especially in stressful moments, breathing accelerates unconsciously, often without us noticing. Over time, this pattern can overwhelm our entire system. This creates a feeling of inner restlessness, shortness of breath, or tension – even if everything appears to be "normal" medically.

That's why I consciously start with breathing when dealing with many ailments.

The underestimated power of exhalation

In respiratory physiotherapy, my particular focus is on exhalation . While many concentrate on "taking deep breaths," they often forget how important a complete exhalation is. Only when we truly exhale does space open up for a new, relaxed inhalation.

Conscious exhalation helps calm our nervous system. It lowers the heart rate, relaxes the body, and regulates breathing volume. Furthermore, it contributes to maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood – an often underestimated but enormously important factor for our cellular health.

Breathe less, live better

It might sound paradoxical, but sometimes breathing less is actually healthier. Breathing too frequently causes our bodies to lose carbon dioxide, which means that oxygen is delivered to the cells less efficiently. The body experiences a kind of "oxygen deficiency," even though enough oxygen has been inhaled.

In breath therapy, I show you ways to achieve more with fewer breaths per minute: greater calmness, better oxygenation, deeper relaxation. This can be achieved, for example, through:

  • Nasal breathing – slower, quieter, more effective

  • Breathing pauses – moments of silence between inhalation and exhalation

  • Diaphragm activation – for more space in the abdomen

  • Correct posture – because it significantly influences breathing

  • Gently reducing your breathing rate – 5-6 breaths per minute can work wonders.

Respiratory physiotherapy in my practice

I integrate breath therapy in a highly individualized way – depending on your specific needs. Whether for long-term COVID, chronic respiratory illnesses, tension, or simply to find your inner balance again: working with the breath is always a journey back to greater vitality and equilibrium.

With targeted exercises, manual therapy and mindful guidance, I help you to find your way back to a natural, healthy breathing rhythm – not through effort, but through conscious letting go.

If you've become curious or feel that your breathing is out of balance, I warmly invite you to come to my practice. Together we will find your path to natural, healing breathwork.
